Abstract:
Chronic pain is a major burden that affects up to one third of the population. Of particular clinical importance are the affective comorbidities of pain, such as stress, major depression, anxiety. Increasing evidences point to neuroinflammation as a potential common driver for pain and its most prevalent comorbidities. In this project, I aim to unravel neuroinflammatory mechanisms at supraspinal sites in the nociceptive pathway. In particular, I am interested in understanding neuronal-glial communication in the parabrachial nucleus, a brainstem area involved in the aversive-emotional processing of nociceptive stimuli.
