Master’s thesis project: Neuronal mechanisms for alleviation of pain aversion
Research at the Neurophysiology Division of the Center for Brain Research in Vienna focuses on neuronal circuits involved in pain processing. A chief aspect of pain is its aversive quality, which constitutes a major psychological burden for chronic pain patients, who often experience elevated anxiety, depression, and social isolation. The successful applicant will join an ongoing team effort to examine how selective manipulation of specific brain circuits may alleviate pain aversion. Training opportunities would include advanced behavioral techniques, optogenetics and intra-cranial microinjections in behaving rodents, as well as in vitro methods such as immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. Highly motivated students with a keen interest in neuroscience, who are capable of learning and working independently while also collaborating with others, are encouraged to apply.
