The major research topics are monoamine neurotransmitter transporters, Parkinson´s disease and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors. Monoamine neurotransmitter transporters are proteins in the plasmalemmal membrane and in the synaptic vesicles of specific neurons. They are physiologically involved in synaptic transmission, but also molecular targets of psychostimulants, antidepressants and neurotoxins. Parkinson´s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder in the pathogenesis of which genetic and exogenous factors are considered to be involved. Genetic factors might be α-synuclein and other proteins which are not only mutated in rare forms of familial parkinsonism but also relevant for the protein and oxidative stress hypothesis of Parkinson´s disease. The detailed regional and subregional basal ganglia neurotransmitter changes in Parkinson´s disease and its models can give insight into the basis of disturbed motor function. NMDA receptors play key roles in excitatory neurotransmission and synaptic plasticity and are targets of therapeutic interest, including neuroprotective drugs.
