In 2004 the former Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna became the independent Medical University of Vienna (Medizinische Universität Wien, MedUni Vienna). The new university carries on the long tradition which begun in 1365 AD when the Medical Faculty was one of the founder members of the Alma Mater Rudolphina Vindobonensis (i.e. the University of Vienna). Now, the university hospital of Vienna, the new Vienna General Hospital (neues Allgemeines Krankenhaus, neues AKH) is the largest hospital in central Europe with a total of 9,000 employees including 1,400 physicians, 2,200 beds, 51 operating theatres. At present 10,000 students are enrolled in M.D. or Ph.D. programmes or master courses such as medical informatics and public health.
